Pakistan’s heat wave is making more and more victims as well as causing power outages.
There was a similar heat wave in Pakistan last year, with 80 people losing their lies due to the extreme meteorological conditions, but this year’s hot weather has reached a new high.
The ongoing heat wave in Pakistan has killed at least 40 more people, according to news reports Wednesday. At least 11 people died in Lahore, capital city of central province of Punjab, on Tuesday.
This comes after temperatures broke all records over the weekend, with 110 dying heat-related deaths.
Lahore had some relief from the merciless heat on Tuesday evening, when there was a windstorm and drizzle, as English-language daily The News reported.
Residents in southern parts of the province had to survive in temperatures soaring to 46 degrees Celsius. Fifteen people died in the city of Multan. Fourteen more died in other parts of the country.
The repeated power cuts seemed to be more than Pakistani citizens could take. There were protests against the government and electricity suppliers in several cities, as well as roadblocks in several districts of Karachi.
The power outages angered tribesmen as well, as they gathered by the hundreds and blocked the road between Pakistan and Afghanistan near the border in the North-West Frontier Province.
The Meteorological Department predicts there will be slightly more bearable temperatures in a couple of days. There are chances of a windstorm and light rain in Islamabad on Wednesday evening.
