More Countries Ban Imports of “Made in China” Diary Products

China’s melamine-tainted milk products, which intoxicated as much as 53,000 infants in the Asian country, are causing more and more nations to ban the imports of diary products wearing the brand “Made in China.”

The latest nations which joined the list of countries that banned imports of Chinese diary products were Australia, New Zealand and India. Everything from candy to biscuits containing milk powder made in China was pulled from shelves.

There were already four death cases caused by milk infection in China. All the cases involved infants.

In Indonesia, food inspectors found about 30 Chinese-made products contaminated with melamine, a substance usually used to manufacture plastic materials and which was probably mixed with milk to make it look richer in protein.

In New Zeeland, British supermarket Tesco pulled White Rabbit Creamy candy (made in China) after learning that it had a higher-than-normal level of melamine, Food Safety Authority and Australian food regulators said.

The New Zeeland Food Safety Agency issued a “Director General's statement advising people not to eat these products,” said Sandra Daly, deputy chief of the agency.

In Vietnam, the Health Ministry inspection teams are on high alert and are looking “into food hygiene and safety standards ... involving in milk and dairy products nationwide."
Indian authorities imposed a three-month ban on imports of Chinese diary products.

So far, there were reports of infants intoxicated with diary products only in China and Hong Kong. The infested products also include crackers found in South Korea, CNN reports.

The latest case of infection involved a 10-year-old boy in Hong Kong. The kid traveled to China and is now suffering kidney problems related to eating diary products. He was hospitalized and is now in stable condition according to the local Centre for Health Protection.
