It appears that the number of West Nile Virus cases is growing more and more in the United States.
A North Dallas inhabitant has been infected with the WNV, this being the second reported case in the city this year. The situation alarmed the authorities, who immediately decided to order mosquito spraying.
In the Suffolk County, located in the U.S. state of New York, a 71-year-old woman and a 72-year-old man have been bitten by a mosquito carrying the West Nile Virus, health officials said. What’s more, a 55-year-old woman from the same county also seems to have contracted the virus. However, the Suffolk City Health Department is conducting a series of tests in order to establish if the people actually fell ill with West Nile virus. Up to now, 14 cases of the disease have been reported in Suffolk. Three of the victims passed away.
In San Joaquin County the situation is similar. The number of human cases topped 13 this year. Health officials don’t know if there will be more victims of the infected mosquitoes. "West Nile virus season continues until we see a sustained drop in temperature," Dr. Dean Kelaita, the county's public health officer, stated "High levels of mosquito activity usually continue until the end of October," she continued.
Last week, Iowa health official announced the state had its first WNV victim. No details were revealed, except that the victim, who died this month, was an elderly man.
These are only a few examples. To avoid exposure to WNV, one should take proper precautions, such as applying mosquito repellant when leaving the house, staying away from mosquito-infested areas, mending damaged window screens and doors or wearing trousers and long-sleeved shirts.
