The most precious gift anyone can get this Christmas is pair of binoculars, as the sky offers tonight a view to remember. Mars and the Moon will put on a big Christmas show during the evening hours.
Tonight the two planets will be close to one another, with Mars rising in the sky about sunset. There would be a 98 percent full moon and Mars will appear extraordinarily bright as well. The pair will cross the sky together and will be almost directly overhead from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Mars’ brightness will be due to it reaching what’s called “opposition” which means it is exactly lined up with the Sun and Earth. Mars also known as the Red Planet was closest to Earth on December 18 when it was 55 million miles away, the closest until 2016.
"If you have a pair of binoculars around you might want to turn them towards the heavens," suggests astronomy educator Judy Stanley of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array in Socorro, New Mexico, according to the Discovery Channel.
This will be the first Christmas Eve with full moon in several years, which will be just perfect for lighting Santa’s way to the homes of millions of good little boys and girls, who are already expecting their most desired gifts. For everyone who won’t get a present on Christmas, Mars and Moon will offer the perfect present one will remember for many years.
