Mom of Autistic Boy Banned from Church Fights for Son's Rights

The mother of the autistic boy that was banned to enter a church in Bertha, Minnesota last month is decided more than ever to fight for the cause of his son and other children suffering from autism.

Following the “disruptive and dangerous” behavior of the 13-year-old Adam Race, as Rev. Daniel Walz of the Church of St. Joseph said in court papers, the church filed a restraining order to stop the boy and his mother, Carol from attending church services.

Rev. Walz said the 225-pound boy urinated during services and once struck a child. This behavior made him worry about his parishioners. In fact this is the reason for which he filed that order against the Races.

Carol Race completely refuted these claims and stated that Adam may be noisy at times, but they usually sit in the back of the church and try to stay quiet. She also said that the restraining order amounts to outright discrimination.

“He said that we did not discipline our son. He said that our son was physically out of control and a danger to everyone at church. I can't discipline him out of his autism, and I think that's what our priest is expecting,” Carol Race said immediately after the ban.

During a court hearing held on Monday, in Todd County District Court, Carol Race pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of violating a restraining order. A pretrial settlement hearing was set for July 14 in Todd County District Court.

Moreover, she and several friends who have autistic children decided to take the fight against the church to the next level, asking church leaders across the country to reserve a pew "for families that might need a special welcome." Therefore, they created a new website www.project-adams-pew.org in order to achieve their goals.

“There are thousands of families not going to church who don't feel welcome because they're afraid they look or act different. They came to church, someone turned around and gave them a dirty look and they walked out and haven't come back,” Carol Race said, as quoted by the local newspaper Minneapolis star tribune.
