The mobile phone industry is taking the necessary steps to ensure that people will never find it hard to charge their phones ever again, by adopting the Universal Charging Solution. What this means, or at least will mean in a couple of years, is that chargers will have a common format, allowing phones to be charged anywhere there is an available charger. The compatibility issues will be gone.
GSMA’s initiative, which convinced 17 leading mobile operators and manufacturers to join the concept, is said to take shape worldwide in 2012. The ambitious project involves using a micro-USB as a universal charging interface for all new mobile phones.
This will not only benefit the consumers, making it easier for them to charge their mobile phones, but it will also benefit the environment, potentially reducing greenhouse gases by 13.6 to 21.8 million tones.
GSMA explained that the initiative will mean a 50 percent reduction in the number of chargers manufactured each year, and consequently a reduction in the greenhouse gases resulted from manufacturing and transporting replacement chargers.
Rob Conway, CEO and member of the board of the GSMA, explained that the mobile industry has an enormous potential to help people live and work in an eco-friendly way. Furthermore, he is convinced that with the biggest names in the industry joining the initiative, it will all prove to be a success.
The companies involved in the universal charger project are: 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
