An autistic boy that was reported missing by his father on Saturday evening was found at around 7 a.m. Monday morning. The boy was in good condition and was able to hike back on the trail by his own.
Alex Irving and his father, Bruce Irving, were hiking Saturday afternoon on the Siouxon trail east of Amboy, in the rugged backcountry near Mount Saint Helens. The two decided to split up and meet at the Siouxon Falls. After Bruce Irving saw that his son wasn't showing up he decided to look for him on his own. By 9:30 p.m he decided to call 911 and ask the authorities to help him.
70 people from the area have joined the search by Sunday. In order to find the missing boy they used dogs, horses and all terrain vehicles, as to be able to cover the area better. One of the things that the search teams feared to become a problem, was the possibility that the boy wouldn't respond to their calls because of his condition.
It seems that one of the biggest threats to Alex Irving's health was the low overnight temperature. While a value in the 40s isn't usually a life threatening one, the boy was wearing only a pair of shorts and a jacket.
According to a local newspaper, KATU, some people in the area have spotted Alex on Saturday afternoon, but, even though they thought it was strange that he was alone, they didn't realize there was anything wrong about the situation until Alex's father came and asked them if they had seen his son.
