As expected, "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire" were the stars yesterday at the Writers Guild of America Awards. The two Oscar contenders receive top honors at the ceremony.
The award for the best original screenplay went to Dustin Lance Black for “Milk,” a movie about the gay-rights leader Harvey Milk who was murdered. Black received a standing ovation. He thanked "God for a dream come true and I thank God for giving us Harvey Milk," in what was the most emotional moment of the evening.
The other big prize – the award for the best adapted screenplay – went to Simon Beaufoy who based its screenplay for "Slumdog Millionaire" on "Q&A," a novel by Vikas Swarup which evolves around an Indian street orphan who makes it big in the entertainment business and also has an emotional love story with a happy end. "Slumdog Millionaire" is considered the Oscar front-runner with 10 nominations.
