Military Helicopter with 14 Passengers Crashes in China

A Chinese military helicopter with ten injured people aboard plus four crew members crashed on Sunday, The Associated Press reported. The aircraft was engaging in quake relief work and due to fog and turbulence crashed near the Yingxiu Township, Wenchuan County in Southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Authorities are currently searching for survivors of the Russian-designed Mi-171 transport helicopter crash. According to the current reports there is no information on survivors or injured, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The helicopter carrying quake relief troops of the Chengdu Military Area Command went down at about 2:56 p.m. according to military sources. The helicopter was returning from a mission to carry epidemic prevention experts to Lixian County.

Chinese authorities ordered on Friday the evacuation of nearly 1.3 million people who are living in the area endangered by the lake formed after the devastating earthquake hit Sichuan province. Chinese soldiers were still working to drain the lake formed above Beichuan town.

Chinese authorities released an updated death toll of the earthquake. Beijing estimated the powerful tremor killed at least 68,109. Another 23,150 are missing. More than 420,000 homes collapsed.

The quake also left approximately five million people without home. Several powerful aftershocks have struck the area hindering the relief efforts. The last aftershock hit the area on Sunday killing six other people and wrecking 300,000 more homes.
