Disney teen idol Miley Cyrus has been recently accused of taunting and mocking people of Asian descent by making slant-eye poses in a personal photograph with her friends.

 

The 16-year-old star appeared in a photo posing together with some friends among which an Asian, pulling their eyes sideways. The snapshot surfaced on the Internet this week and started a big commotion since certain people felt offended by it.

 

George Wu, executive director of the national Asian Pacific American nonprofit OCA released a statement on Monday in which he said that Miley’s behavior was a gross lack of judgment because she and her friends encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent. More than that, she has also seriously insulted many Asian Pacific American people.

 

Mr. Wu added that the fact that one of the men pictured in the photo appears to be of Asian descent that definitely does not make the gesture "acceptable."

 

The OCA, a national organization in the United States dedicated to advancing the social and political welfare of Asian Pacific Americans, called for the singer-actress to apologize to her fans and the entire Asian Pacific American community for her gesture which "falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent."

 

Representatives for the “Hannah Montana” leading star did not immediately return calls for comment. On the other hand, Cyrus did apologize to fans, but it was on another occasion and reason. It happened last year when a Vanity Fair photo shoot showed her bare naked.
