Disneyland was the place to be on Sunday for all Miley Cyrus fans who had a $250 ticket to her 16th birthday party celebrated a few weeks in advance.
Returning the favor Miley Cyrus has given them in the form of its widely popular series, "Hannah Montana," Disney threw her a huge sweet sixteen birthday party complete with fireworks set to the dual-personality star’s hit "The Best of Both Worlds."
"My parents shut down Disneyland for me, so I’m good for a while," Miley Cyrus said yesterday, prior to her early 16th birthday celebration. More than 5,000 guests (many of whom paid $250) crammed inside the amusement park to join the Hannah Montana star on the big day. In addition to the thousands of fans, a host of big-name celebrities, including "American Idol" runner-up David Archuleta, Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford, Steve Carell and many others were on hand for the event.
The theme park was closed for the supersized soiree, which included a four-song performance by the teen queen and a fireworks display above Sleeping Beauty Castle and 16 giant inflatable candles. The park's main attractions, Big Thunder Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean, remained open for partygoers.
"Miley is really hard to surprise," her father Billy Ray Cyrus said at the event. He also warmed up the crowd for his daughter's performance with a few of his own songs, including "Achy Breaky Heart." Although he avoided the carpet rush, Cyrus's new beau, Justin Gaston, emerged onstage to help Billy Ray open up the show.
"This is the most amazing sweet 16 that a girl could have!" Cyrus, who wore a white ruffled skirt and jersey-like vest with "Sweet 16" printed on the back , boasted as she stepped on stage to perform.
Cyrus performed a short concert, including a duet with her dad and then took 10 lucky Youth Service of America volunteers on the Disneyland rides. At one point, she boarded a boat in the park's Rivers of America and crooned such tunes as "Breakout" and "G.N.O."
However, it wasn’t all fun and games and Splash Mountain for everyone. Miley’s party date landed on the last day of Disneyland’s annual Gay Days, which drew in around 30,000 people for the unofficially designated three days each year. Disney bowed to their Tween Queen’s request to close the park early, cutting time off the the 3-day event. Gay Days attendees were tolerant, though, and said it was their day to go across the concrete to California Adventure anyway, which is staying open late to be accommodating.
Event producer Jeffrey Epstein said Cyrus' affair didn't conflict with Gay Days Anaheim.
"We're happy to share our big weekend with Miley," said Epstein. "While it may be a small world after all, we think it's big enough for both groups to have a blast."
Rolling a PR, advertising, and tween-fan stunt all into one, Disney also took the opportunity to plug their "What Will You Celebrate?" tourist campaign and give a hefty donation to Youth Service of America organization.
