Miley Cyrus may have controversy buzz around her like no
other but this appears to be no problem for her fans, who rushed out to
purchase her latest release “Breakout,” bringing it to the top of the Billboard
200 with a whopping 371,000 copies.
Teen idol Miley Cyrus has been in the center of attention
for a while now, first for the fascination and adoration she generated with her
Hannah Montana character in the Disney Channel series of the same name.
Her North American Best of Both Worlds tour last year was
sold-out show after show after show, with a never-before-seen fever on
consumers’ part to attend her concerts and with ticket brokers consequently making
fortunes.
It appears that those same people desperate to attend her
shows now rushed into stores to acquire her first standalone album, “Breakout,”
which has no connection whatsoever with Hannah Montana.
Miley Cyrus’ previous studio efforts were connected to her
television persona. The first “Hannah Montana” soundtrack launched her
recording career in 2006 debuting at No. 1, with first-week sales of 281,000.
The teenager’s last release, a double album titled “Hannah
Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus,” consisting in one album featuring
songs off the show’s soundtrack and a second album representing Miley Cyrus’
debut solo album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with 326,000 copies
sold.
“Breakout” sold 371,000 copies in its first week of
availability, becoming the second best-selling album by a female artist, reports
Billboard, closely behind Mariah Carey’s “E=MC2,” which sold 463,000 during its
first week of release in April.
Miley Cyrus may be only 15 and cute and sweet but she’s a
force to be reckoned with. Even seasoned stars like Madonna and Janet Jackson are
trailing behind “Breakout.” The Queen of Pop’s “Hard Candy” sold 280,000 copies
when it debuted earlier this year, while Janet Jackson’s “Discipline” sold
181,000 copies in March.
It was not long ago that Miley Cyrus’ future with Disney was
being questioned, after a photograph
revealing her bare back appeared in Vanity Fair magazine, prompting many to say
that this was no proper behavior from a celebrity who is deemed role model for children
and tweens.
Photographer Annie Leibovitz explained at the time that she
simply thought the image “beautiful” and that there had been no other
intentions.
Miley Cyrus apologized and said she felt “embarrassed” when
she saw the photograph and confessed as early as last month that she was still
affected by the controversy, telling Billboard that it “still hurts” but that
she strives to focus on more positive things.
It was also during that period that several other photos
surfaced, showing the girl with friends, baring some skin. Not exactly
scandalous but still attention-worthy.
The Disney Channel stood by its “Hannah Montana” superstar,
arguing that being 15 and extraordinarily famous simultaneously can lead to
some misunderstandings.
Gary Marsh, Disney Channel entertainment president, told the
Los Angeles Times at the time: “Being the most famous 15-year-old in the world
is exciting but fraught with challenges and exceptional responsibility.”
Whatever else happens, Miley Cyrus is evidently the most
charming famous 15-year-old in the world.
