Mike Myers to Emcee MTV Movie Awards

Comedian Mike Myers has been announced as this year’s host of the MTV Movie Awards, which will air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif., on June 1.

Myers has hosted the event before, in 1997. The actor’s quirky sense of humor is a match made in heaven with the typically irreverent awards show, which honors artists with golden popcorn-box trophies in categories such as best kiss, best villain, best fight and best comedic performance.

“Hosting the MTV Movie Awards is like a party, but without having to do beer runs in your mom's mini van,” Myers says in a statement, as quoted by People.com. “We do beer runs in Will Smith's four-story motor home,” he added.

Nominees for the 2008 MTV Movie Awards will be announced in May, the music channel said. People confirms that “Survivor” and “The Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett is the executive producer. This will be the 17th annual presentation.

Myers received MTV’s Generation Award last year, the awards show’s highest honor which recognizes an actor or actress who has continuously "delighted" audiences over many years.

The 45-year-old Canadian-born actor next stars in “The Love Guru,” a comedy co-starring Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake, under the direction of Marco Schnabel. Myers portrays a man who was brought up by gurus in an Indian Ashram, who then returns to his native U.S. and tries to enter the self-help industry.

His parodic Guru Pitka is already being compared with Sacha Baron Cohen’s infamous Borat character in the 2006 box office success “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.” That film was abundantly criticized by many yet managed to earn $128 million domestically.

Paramount officials have already stated that “The Love Guru” in no way means to offend Hindus or Hinduism and that it is a “non-denominational comedy that celebrates spirituality and that the character has his own fictional belief system,” as quoted by the Associated Press.

The film opens June 20.
