Microsoft’s New I'm A PC Ad: Way, Way Off Target

I just don’t get it. Last time I checked Microsoft had a market share of approximately 90 percent from the computer market, while Apple was struggling to reach 10 percent.

So, why would Microsoft go gunning after a competitor this small? Why spending millions and millions of dollars to create and promote counter-ads with “I’m A PC” (the reference to the famous Apple’s ad “I’m A Mac, I’m A PC” being obvious)

I must admit that I wasn’t such a big fan of Seinfeld-Gates’ ads, but at least they are (were?) something different and at least Microsoft was trying a new approach. Maybe not a perfect approach, but at least they were a whole lot funnier than watching a bunch of people saying “I’m A PC”

One of them is Bill Gates, who seems to have dropped his journey with Seinfeld in the world of “real people” just to tell us that he is a PC too. Yeah, like we wouldn’t figure out this one on our own.

OK, I get the message. The PC is ideal for a lot of people, from different countries with various jobs or hobbies, but I don’t see how this will make me get up, go to the store and buy Windows Vista or any other version of Windows.

Instead, the new ad made me think something like this: Ok, there I see a big company with an impressive market share, which seems to have the perfect operating system for my needs, but they seem to be very worried over an ad in which some guy says “I’m Mac”.

So, there should be something after all about these Macs. So, why wouldn’t I go to a store to buy a Mac and see what this fuzz is all about?

Ohh…and one more thing. Maybe instead of spending countless money, Microsoft should start paying attention and hire Ridley Scott, Steve Hayden and Lee Clow to do their ads (the people who created Apple's 1984 ad). Ohh..wait, but who is going to be The Big Brother?
