Microsoft finally decided to call it quits with its initial
advertising campaign starring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates, and move to
another direction, after receiving nothing but bad reviews from the two ad episodes.
The massive $300 million campaign was supposed to revive the
company and help improve the general perception on Microsoft’s Vista operating
system. Unfortunately, Jerry Seinfeld’s humor wasn’t as sharp as in the good
old days and Bill Gates’ appearance didn’t help either. The two videos were labeled
as not at all amusing and also pointless, as people did not see the connection
between the stars’ actions and the campaign’s announced message.
The official statement reads: "We will be executing the
second phase of our advertising campaign tomorrow, as planned from the
start." This was also backed up by Seinfeld’s agent who explained that
this was indeed the plan all along, with the two videos as an introduction for
the overall campaign. "All along we said we were having a teaser campaign,”
he said.
The ad campaign will continue with its next ‘scheduled’
part, called "Windows. Life without walls" which is expected to actually
un-tarnish Vista's reputation and will feature a mix of average PC users and also
celebrity PC users. Some of those Vista-using celebrities who will be featured
in the commercials are: Eva Longoria, Deepak Chopra, and Pharrell Williams.
Bill Gates will also make some cameo appearances.
At this point, anything that Microsoft plans has to be better
than its initial move, but it would be a nice change to see a clip that
actually sends a message and touches the public, just as the company announced
from the beginning.
