In the latest development of the Microsoft versus the European Commission story, the software giant argued that the Commission might obligate users to choose a browser while setting up a new PC. And this is where my heart stopped for a second, when I began re-reading: users might be forced to choose…
If I remember correctly, Microsoft has been delivering the Windows – Internet Explorer bundle for years, and that was no choice for Windows users. I for one am a regular Windows user, with no intention whatsoever of using Internet Explorer, no matter the version.
However, Microsoft did not leave the other browsers out of the picture, and for whoever doesn’t want to use IE, downloading something else is always a solution.
If the European Commission would have its way with the Windows – Internet Explorer bundle, such a remedy might include a requirement that OEMs distribute multiple browsers on new Windows-based PCs, Microsoft explained.
Furthermore, we may also be required to disable certain unspecified Internet Explorer software code if a user chooses a competing browser, Microsoft also wrote.
While the interest of the European Commission in Microsoft's practices keeps getting weirder, one thing is for sure: Microsoft made the operating system, and - I’m going to hate myself for this - Microsoft has the right to put ITS browser in ITS operating system.
Furthermore, I would understand the frustration part from the competition IF Windows would not permit the use of other browsers. But that’s not the case, so what’s with all this envy?
