While everyone is busy to guess what will unveil Steve Jobs
during the upcoming event entitled not so cryptic “Let’s Rock”, Microsoft tries
to remember us that they have a music player of their own. You guessed! We are
talking about the famous wanna-be iPod killer, Zune.
And, as Apple’s boss is expected to take up the stage to
unveil a new iPod lineup, Microsoft was quick to spill the beans about their
new version of Zune.
At least, we should agree on one thing: Microsoft doesn’t
give up! Even if after almost two years, their Zune has just 4 percent of the
market.
However, the new Zune will have larger storage capacities
and cheaper prices. For example, the hard drive-based Zune will offer now 120
GB to all music lovers for only $249. For those of you who are into the
flash-based media players, Microsoft has two goodies in store: a 16 GB model
for $199 or a 8 GB version for $149. Nevertheless, Microsoft has good news for
all Zune owners, as they will get a free software update.
Why? Because starting with September 16 the users will be
able to tag and purchase songs directly from the built-in FM radio service on
the player, of course if Wi-Fi is within range.
In case Wi-Fi is not available, the device will have a queue
of songs ready to download when connected to a home computer or in a hot spot.
As you might remember, earlier this year, Zune was in the
spotlight because GameStop has decided to stop selling the device because of
insufficient demand and because is not a gaming platform.
Apparently, Microsoft has learned its lesson and the new
versions of Zune will include two free games, "Hexic" and "Texas Hold 'Em”. Also,
Zune will offer support for audiobooks from audible.com.
Maybe will all these additions and power-ups Zune will
manage to increase its market share. However, I still wonder: what will Steve
Jobs has to say tomorrow?
