In anticipation for the Barcelona GSMA World Mobile Congress scheduled to take place next week, all eyes are on Microsoft as it is expected to reveal more details about an accidentally leaked cell phone service called My Phone.
With still not enough details to give you a full picture of My Phone, what we can say is this: Steve Ballmer will probably include it in his presentation, and Apple will probably raise an eyebrow. Why? Because the service is quite similar to the MobileMe one, with one big difference: it will be free.
Microsoft accidentally launched (I know, it does sound strange) the My Phone website last week. Hours later, the company confirmed that the service will be launched soon, is a limited invite-only beta, and said more details about it will be given at the Mobile World Congress in Spain.
But here’s what Microsoft did post about My Phone: first of all, it’s a service that syncs information on the user’s mobile phone to a storage website. In case the phone is lost, stolen, or changed, users can use the website to restore the information they’ve lost.
Furthermore, My Phone is also a sharing service, allowing users to save photos they’ve taken with their camera phone on the My Phone website, and save them to their computer or send them to friends and family by e-mail.
As for the cost of the service, Microsoft does not charge a fee for the My Phone service at this time. This doesn’t mean things are going to stay like this, or that the mobile operator won’t charge users for data-transfer operations.
