Monday, Microsoft Corporation announced that it had clinched a deal with LG Electronics entailing that the former company’s Windows software would be featured on most of the latter’s smartphones.
Andy Lees, the head of Windows' wireless unit, stated for Reuters that a majority of LG Electronics’ smartphones would come to use Windows under the partnership.
For the time being, Taiwan-based manufacturer of portable devices High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC) is the world's largest maker of phones that makes use of Microsoft Windows Mobile, which is an operating system combined with a range of basic applications for handsets.
Currently, Samsung Electronics, Motorola and Sony Ericsson all market Windows Mobile-based cell phones, yet for the the three companies, these devices account for only a small part of their offer.
Microsoft’s Windows mobile operating system was at some point the second-most popular for smartphones, following Nokia's Symbian, still it has been outrun by Apple Incorporated and Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry smartphones.
In the spirit of rebranding, Microsoft has also released a backup service for data stored on Windows-based phones, while it has revamped its wireless offering to Windows from Windows Mobile, as well.
Moreover, at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, the tech giant unveiled its Windows Mobile 6.5, which is an update to its OS that sets out to render the software more „finger friendly” and more enticing to customers.
The update has been scheduled to be made available on phones the fourth quarter of this year.
