We've all seen the Microsoft add, with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld talking about...well...I'm sure they know better... And most of us probably went: what?!?!?! Although most people are tempted to say that this campaign started off on the wrong foot, maybe we should stop and think that there's more to it.
Actually, Microsoft had a better idea, choosing to explain the campaign start. According to them, this was all a warm up, and it was not intended to promote any Microsoft product, but simply re-connect the company with its users.
You have to admit it though, if you look at the commercial and you're expecting to see a computer popping on your screen, then yes, it's probably hard to get. However, if you just take the ad itself, it's actually funny, sprinkled with some Seinfeld humor and Bill Gates' complete lack of acting skills, which is probably the funniest part.
Microsoft needs to catch up with Apple, and the $300 million campaign add is intended for just that! Although many of us probably expected them to be more “aggressive” with their first ad, I believe it's important to make people want more, and I am very curious to see the next ad, which will probably embrace more of the Apple rivalry.
Behind Microsoft's marketing campaign is none other than CEO Steve Ballmer, who wrote in an email sent to the company’s employees in July: “Now it’s time to tell our story,” adding that “in the weeks ahead, we’ll launch a campaign to address any lingering doubts our customers may have about Windows Vista.” Furthermore, he added that this year, the company will come up with “a more comprehensive effort to redefine the meaning and value of Windows for our customers.”
