Yesterday was supposed to be download day for Windows 7, but apparently Microsoft was unable to handle the traffic, and it decided to postpone the availability of its beta version until additional infrastructure is added.
According to a company blog, Microsoft.com needs further support before reposting the public beta, in order to give customers the best possible experience upon downloading the operating system. “We’re excited that you are excited,” the blog post ends.
The announcement is to be appreciated, since there have been a lot of users trying to complete a download yesterday, including me. However, I can’t help but wonder why Microsoft wasn’t prepared for this, since the announcement of the Windows 7 OS caused a lot of momentum.
Furthermore, the curiosity of seeing whether there is a cure for Vista (and by cure I mean replacing it), should have sent Microsoft some kind of signal that the download day will be overwhelmed with demand.
The funny part is that users are often more inspired than the company, and more of them actually suggested there would have been a better, easier way to make it all happen: torrents.
Unfortunately for the millions waiting, time is running out, there is still no information on how many keys are still available (since there are only 2.5 million of them) or on how long it is going to take for Microsoft to fix the problem. More details on the waiting time would have been appreciated.
