Microsoft Demos Emerging Technology During TechFest 2009

Technology as we see it now is just a small glimpse of what technology will look like in a few year’s time, and Microsoft is willing to give us a taste of what’s to come during its Microsoft Research TechFest 2009. These new technologies will change the way people interact with computers, will be more energy-efficient, and will emerge in the next generation of Microsoft products, the company said.

Microsoft Senior Vice President Rick Rashid, in charge of Microsoft Research, explained that after the first such event took place, it became clear how benefic it was for both employees and researchers, as it would help them realize the potential of the technologies they are developing.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, also said in his Congress address earlier this month: America has to return to growth that’s built on innovation and productivity, rather than leverage and private debt. We need to renew our innovation capacity.

The event will put on display more than 100 innovations, which cover a wide variety of uses, from rural education and healthcare technologies, to devices for mobile computing, search platforms, software and security, systems and databases, graphics and media and more.

Microsoft’s demonstrations include a device with touch input on the back and one with a clear tactile overlay directly on the display, an experimental prototype to study the use of low-power processors in the data center, a new surface-computing technology that can project images and detect gestures in mid-air above the display, an externally facing search engine that serves as a platform for incubation that will be released to the web this summer and more.
