Microsoft Brings Ads to Zune

Microsoft used its Advance08 conference to announce that an advertising service will be added to its social site, Zune. The software giant has also shown a mock campaign for the popular Doritos chips, and how it can start on the social site and then transcend to other media too.

The idea around which the demo campaign was conceived was that Doritos is sponsoring a concert. An artist that is part of the show creates a Zune profile, and users who check it out can see a list of music that the artist likes. All the time the Doritos logo is present on the artist’s profile.

The user could download the music from the list on his or her Zune player for free, thanks to the fact that the chips company is paying for it. However, an ad for Doritos will also come together with the music. Then, the user could e-mail the artist’s profile to a friend, who would download the mail on his phone or PC via hotmail.

When opened, the mail will show a Doritos ad at first, and could also contain an invitation to play a simple game in which the Doritos logo would be present.

It long became clear that Microsoft has been in a continuous search to find ways to allow ads to invade every product the company made, finding a way for it even in the popular Xbox 360.

Until now, the company’s success laid in the fact it has managed to do this in a way that hasn’t bothered the majority of its customers, and chances are that it will be to achieve the same thing with Zune advertising also.
