Rumors about Microsoft making its own smartphone resurfaced on Thursday, when Broadpoint AmTech analyst Doug Freedman wrote about the possibility. While some expected Microsoft to make such an announcement during this year’s CES, other speculated that we will witness that announcement this February, during the GSMA Mobile World Congress.
Microsoft has denied all rumors so far, reiterating once again that they are not working on any smartphone device, but they will continue to work on developing software services, as well as continue collaboration with Nvidia.
Windows Mobile director Scott Rockfeld was quoted by CNET News as saying: Microsoft has no plans to make a phone. Our core focus has been and will continue to be providing software plus services and working with our partners to deliver great phones. We continue to collaborate with Nvidia on the delivery of innovative solutions that move the smartphone industry and the consumer experience forward.
Nvidia did not make any comments on the speculations, but the assumption is that Microsoft’s smartphone, if one will indeed be launched, will be based on Nvidia’s Tegra chip.
At the end of the day, Microsoft’s smartphone would not and should not come as a surprise. Microsoft has its own mobile platform, why wouldn’t it combine it with its home-made phone?
While not everyone agrees that releasing its own smartphone would be a smart move from Microsoft, the curiosity is there. The conference in Barcelona, Spain will probably be the most anticipated event of the next two weeks.
