Microsoft’s Windows Live OneCare suite received an update recently, bringing the desktop security and management package to version 2.0. One of the major improvements refers to the possibility of managing multiple desktops connected in a local network.
Support for printer sharing is also available and the software is also “capable” of making recommendations concerning a PC’s performance (after a short analysis) and it even fixes domains where human intervention could be considered unnecessary.
Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Beta can provide monthly reports on regular activities performed on the desktop, and can also improve boot-times by removing seldom used applications from the boot-menu.
Although it failed numerous anti-virus tests in the past and was considered among the least secure software solutions for a PC’s protection, OneCare 2.0 is still packed with an anti-virus and firewall module.
The software can also be configured to back up photos and other important data online through Windows Live Folders, which is available at an additional cost. Finally, the upgrade offers Wi-Fi connection security to protect wireless data transfers.
Downloading and installing OneCare 2.0 Beta comes free, however you’ll have to pay $49.95 to enjoy the full OneCare 1.5 service- a price established by Microsoft for up to three computers. OneCare 1.5 was launched in January 2007 and until now has failed to meet expectations, mainly due to its feebleness in fighting with malware.
