Mickey Rourke Won’t Be Wrestling Chris Jericho After All

Method actor Mickey Rourke will not throw WWE superstar Chris Jericho "around the ring like tossed salad" at April's Wrestlemania, the actor's rep tells the Associated Press, contradicting Rourke's comments at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. In other words, the 56 year-old actor won't be wrestling after all.

"The Wrestler" has garnered much attention due to the powerhouse performance of Mickey Rourke, but just as impressive is the filmmaking of Darren Aronofsky. This story, about a washed up fighter, is a tour-de-force, and should have received recognition beyond the performances.

The match was highly anticipated, especially since Rourke himself was the first made the announcement. It would have been a great spectacle, indeed. Meanwhile, Jericho, appearing on WWE television, said he was offended by Rourke's comments and Rourke had made "a mistake."

Mickey Rourke, who was one a professional boxer himself, succeeded in making what might be considered the performance of a lifetime by playing the tragic hero. His portrayal has already recently been recognized through both a Golden Globe Award and Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Despite this year's hefty competition such as Sean Penn, Rourke may actually run away with the award at the 81st Academy Awards.

One major aspect of the film that makes it so astonishing to experience is the obvious parallel between the lives of "The Ram" and Mickey himself. If you're not familiar with his earlier work let me tell you that in the mid '80s and early '90s, Rourke was considered to be the next Robert DeNiro, through acclaimed performances in films like "The Pope of Greenwich Village" (1984), "Angel Heart" (1987) and "Barfly" (1987).
