“Lost” actress Michelle Rodriguez was sentenced to six months behind bars earlier this week for violating her probation on several DUI-related charges and she is gruff about it, as expected.
The 29-year-old actress was approached by a paparazzi agency outside of her house yesterday, according to media reports, and she was willing to share her feelings about the upcoming jail time.
Michelle commented that 180 days behind bars is “probably pretty rough” for her offences but that she is “taking complete responsibility for everything.”
Since 2005, when she was arrested in Hawaii – at the time she was filming for her part as Ana Lucia on the hit series “Lost” – a lot of things have changed in Michelle’s life. “I lost my house, lost my cars – that hurt,” the actress said, adding that her problems with the law add up to close to $100,000.
Worst of all, Michelle said, is that she got a reputation as a “reckless” actor and this affected her career. Losing money “wasn't as bad as not working for about two years, you know, cause then people have a hard time trusting you. They think that you're like... I don't know, reckless or something.”
Not all is lost however, as her part on James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi film “Avatar” is apparently not jeopardized by her legal troubles. A message on her MySpace profile reads: “Michelle will still be leaving for New Zealand to film James Cameron's ‘Avatar’ and will then report back to turn herself in to serve her sentence by Christmas Eve.”
The message adds that Michelle, who has appeared in “The Fast and the Furious” and “Resident Evil,” “is and will be just fine.”
“Just hours after this ruling, she's as positive as ever…. Michelle is a survivor and is always growing from her experiences, and this will be no different.”
L.A. City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan confirmed Wednesday that the actress had been sentenced after violating her probation. She has apparently consumed alcohol on three occasions while wearing an alcohol-monitoring device and lied about completing court-ordered community service.
Michelle was sentenced to three years' probation in L.A. in 2004 after pleading no contest to three offences: misdemeanor DUI, hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license.
In 2005, she was arrested once more on another drink-driving charge, this time in Hawaii. She pleaded guilty to one charge of driving under the influence and chose to spend five days in an Oahu jail instead of doing 240 hours of community service.
As a result of violating her L.A. – based probation, Michelle was sentenced to 60 days in jail in 2006, but served only a few hours because of overcrowding. She was also ordered to have alcohol rehabilitation treatment, do 30 days of community service – which she still has to complete, along with her 6 months in jail - and stay on probation until June 2009.
Filming for “Avatar” is set to begin this month in New Zealand, according to her website. She can next be seen in “Battle in Seattle,” a drama co-starring Charlize Theron, Andre Benjamin, and Ray Liotta.
