Michael Moore, the US
filmmaker known for his controversial documentaries such as “Fahrneheit 9/11” and “Bowling
For Columbine”, has launched his latest movie at France’s Cannes
Film Festival.
Called “Sicko”, the Moore’s
documentary is investigating the state of US healthcare system. Moore, who already
won a Palme d’Or for “Fahrneheit 9/11” described “Sicko” as “call to action”.
“Sicko” is presenting the personal stories of people who
have experienced some of the problems of US healthcare system. For example, Moore is investigating the
case of elderly couple whose massive healthcare debt eventually forced them to
move out of their house and into their daughter's basement.
In another story, Moore
is talking with a woman who was involved in a head-collision. After being
treated at the hospital, she had to pay the cost of ambulance from the accident
because the insurance company rejected her claim, stating that she had not
arranged prior approval.
Also, the documentary shows Moore
taking rescue workers from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, who are
suffering from symptoms believed to be connected to their rescue work, to a
naval base near Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba.
Because of his trip to Cuba,
Moore is facing
a fine or jail because, according to United States Treasury, he broke the trade
embargo, as he did not have a license to travel to this country.
According to media reports, the movie received a warm
welcome at Cannes Film Festival and it is one of the favorites. The movie will open
in US in late June.
