Twenty-six years since its making, Michael Jackson’s iconic video for “Thriller” is still able to cause some buzz.
The “Thriller” phenomenon is about to be resurrected by producer James L. Nederlander who announced he acquired the rights to make a new musical based on the zombie-themed video for the hit.
“The Nederlanders and Michael Jackson represent live theater and musical excellence, so let the music begin,” Michael Jackson’s rep, Tohme Tohme, said Monday, adding that the pop star himself will be involved in the project’s every creative process.
Following a similar storyline with the video, the musical will reportedly tell the story of a boy and a girl out on a date when the boy turns into a werewolf. The show will feature tunes from both “Thriller” (including “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “P.Y.T.”) and Jackson’s previous album “Off the Wall.”
“I love the idea of making Thriller a musical. Girl meets boy, they fall in love, boy has big secret,” quipped producer James L. Nederlander, whose company runs nine Broadway theaters.
So it looks like Michael Jackson will make his comeback after all, only not on the pop music scene, or as a host of a children's TV show as previously rumored.
Estimated theater dates of the show, the cast, who will pen the script or direct the musical have not yet been revealed.
Most recently, Jackson’s rep denied repots that the 50-year-old entertainer was battling a life-threatening lung condition. Instead, the rep insisted, Jackson had all kinds of big plans for 2009.
“Mr. Jackson is in fine health and finalizing negotiations with a major entertainment company and television network for both a world tour and a series of specials and appearances,” said Tohme.
