Miami Police Arrested Suspect in Philly Officer Shooting

Miami police have arrested a man who is supposed to be the shooter of the Philadelphia Police officer during a robbery at a Dunkin’ Donuts shop last week.

Officer Chuck Cassidy 54 died on Thursday, a day after he was shot in the head when he interrupted an armed robbery at a Dunkin’ Donuts shop, the Associated Press reported.

John Lewis, 21 was captured around 6:30 a.m. this morning in the chapel of the Miami Rescue Mission, police stated.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson expressed his relief that catching Lewis did not lead to more violence.

"That was my greatest fear — someone else being hurt, either because of him, or by him," Johnson said at a news conference.

During the interrogatory of Miami police and Philadelphia police, Lewis confessed that she was the man responsible for Cassidy’s death.

"To assist in closing this case brings a certain amount of satisfaction, even though it's a sad situation," Miami Police Chief John Timoney said at a news conference in Miami. He also said that Lewis comment upon his serious crime but he did not want to give more details about the case.

Sylvester Johnson already made public that one of the two weapons officers recovered Monday at a Philadelphia home might be the weapon that killed Cassidy when he entered the doughnut shop.

According to some statements of the people who witnessed the incident an armed man entered the shop on Wednesday and asked for money threatening with his gun. When Officer Cassidy entered the door, he was immediately shot in the head having no time left to react. A surveillance video tape released by police shows the shooter grabbing the fallen officer’s pistol.

Lewis is not at his first charge. In 2005, he was arrested on drug charges and had to participate to a treatment program, which he completed in February. He also was accused of a theft the same year. Both charges were withdrawn in 2006. This year in June he was arrested again on drug charges but that case is pending.

The funeral service with public viewing for Cassidy was scheduled on Wednesday.
