Mexican Food May Protect Women against Breast Cancer

New research by Utah scientists asserts that Mexican food may help prevent breast cancer.

The study, involving hundreds of women and their daily diets, found that Mexican food like soups, cheeses and tomato-based sauces could actually prevent breast cancer.

“I think it's that hot flavor that we crave, that's probably the most addicting part of it, so maybe there's something with that and the body chemistry and how the body functions,” said Stephanie Jaquez, according to NBC 7/39.

The study was based on the diets of both Caucasian and Hispanic women. Therefore, the researchers say it is still unclear why the different diets could reduce or increase the risk of breast cancer.

However, Dr. James Cevallos said diet has a small influence when measuring a woman’s risk to develop breast cancer. The main factor to be considered here is whether breast cancer runs in your family.

“Family history is super important as far as breast cancer risk. Does your mother or sister have breast cancer?” he said. He also added that the best away to prevent the developing of breast cancer is to eat healthy and get regular mammograms.

The study also looked at the Mediterranean diet, a low-fat low-calorie diet and the western diet. It was the western diet, mainly based on sugary foods, refined grains and fast foods that showed greatest risk of breast cancer.

The study, released Tuesday, appears in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
