Metallica’s new album, “Death Magnetic,” has hit the shelves in the United Kingdom earlier than planned.
The famous rock band’s highly-anticipated 12th album was due out on Friday, but Vertigo (Metallica’s record label) gave the green light to U.K. shops to sell before the planned date after some retailers broke the sale restriction.
One of the retailers which broke the embargo was Zavvi’s Oxford Street store in London. The store started selling Death Magnetic on Wednesday. HMV, which owns over 50 per cent of the music retail market in the UK, also announced the album was available in stores for the price of Ł9.99 (approximately $20).
"We were advised yesterday by the label that because it's been leaked quite heavily, they should bring forward its physical release and allow retailers to merchandise it,” said an HMV spokesperson.
About 2,500 copies of Metallica’s 12th album were sold by the end of Wednesday. However, a spokesperson for the rock band said the official release date was still Friday.
Six full tracks from the band’s new album are currently streaming on Metallica.com. The songs are:
- The Day That Never Comes
- My Apocalypse
- Cyanide
- All Nightmare Long
- Broken, Beat & Scarred
- The Judas Kiss.
The first leak was reportedly caused by a Paris record store which sold copies of the album as early as September 2. “Death Magnetic” will also be downloadable for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
To celebrate the album release, Metallica will play two shows: one in Berlin on September 12 and another one in London on September 15. Tickets for both shows cost under $20 and are available only to fan club members.
