German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Saturday that delicate subjects like human rights or safety problems involving products manufactured in China will be debated with Chinese officials during her visit to the Asian country.
Merkel, who is due to arrive on Monday in Beijing, said relations with China allow her to discuss some touchy issues that have raised the concern of the international community. The Beijing government is often criticized for allegedly violating human rights and Merkel has been urged to bring up this subject during talks with the country’s top-ranking diplomats.
The Chinese authorities are under heavy fire from human rights groups for harassing activists during their campaigns that are taking place a year before the Summer Olympic Games kick off in the capital Beijing.
Amnesty International underlined the “disastrous human rights situation in China,” where no more than 70 felonies can cost people the ultimate price- life.
Another reason of concern is represented by the faulty products China has exported to large markets, most of those items being used by children. Toys with different flaws, toxic pet food and even toothpaste reached the shelves of stores in the United States, Canada and other countries, prompting the local authorities to ban some imports from China.
The Chancellor will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and different groups before flying to Japan on Wednesday.
There, she is scheduled to hold several rounds of discussions with officials regarding global warming and measures of preventing this phenomenon.
