A day after hundreds of people attended the public memorial of Jennifer Hudson’s slain mother, brother and nephew, a church in Chicago’s South Side was prepared today to host the funeral service.
The memorial was held at Pleasant Gift Memorial Baptist Church. First there was a private ceremony attended by family members and friends and then there was the public gathering. The star singer/actress didn’t attend both services.
Her mother and brother were found shot dead in an apartment in the city’s South Side, while her 7-year-old nephew was found a few days later also shot dead in a vehicle.
The private funerals for Donerson, Julian King (nephew) and 29-year-old Jason Hudson (brother) were held at Apostolic Church of God.
No one has been charged for the crimes yet. Police have the estranged husband of the singer’s sister Julia, 27-year-old William Balfour, in custody as he is considered a "person of interest."
New York friends of Jennifer Hudson told the New York Daily News that the singer couldn’t set foot inside the home where the tragic killings took place.
The singer’s mother, Darnell Donerson, has reportedly voted before being killed. The piece of information was provided by a cousin who spoke before mourners at Pleasant Gift Memorial Baptist Church.
“Doll refused to be left out of this historical moment in this nation, and before she left these shores she cast her vote,” Shari Sweat said.
