‘Meet the Spartans’ Steals ‘Rambo’’s Thunder at the Box Office

It seems that comedy rules all, when it comes about movie and people’s taste. At least this is what the North American weekend box office revealed.

“Meet the Spartans,” a 20th Century Fox parody opened at No.1, with an estimated gross of 18, 7 million, leaving behind Sylvester Stallone’s 50 million dollar movie “Rambo,” which hit the silver screen across the globe January 25.

“I think everyone expected ‘Rambo’ to be number one. There are definitely a lot of serious films out there but there was a big enough audience looking to have silly, mindless fun at movie theaters,” Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media by Numbers, which compiles box office projections, was quoted by Reuters.

It seems that teenagers and young adults formed 75 percent of the “Meet the Spartan”’s audience and that turned it into a biggest success, while “Rambo” was popular with nostalgic older men.

“We are thrilled with the numbers. We made it for young people and they came, said Bert Livingstone, senior vice president of distribution at Fox.

The ninety-three full minutes of Stallone’s movie, picturing the return of John Rambo in the most violent way, debuted at No. 2 with $18.2 million, while another Fox comedy, “27 Dresses,” starring Katherine Heigl as the perpetual bridesmaid, finished the week-end at No. 3, with $13.6 million.

“Cloverfield,” the last week’s box office champ, which set a January opening record with $41 million, dropped at No. 4 with 12.7 million, a 68 percent decline.

Sony Pictures comedy “Untraceable” featuring Diane Lane as an FBI cybercrime investigator, opened at No. 5 with an estimated gross of $11.2, while No.6 is taken by the season little charmer “Juno” with 10.3 million, after its four Oscar nominations.

Warner Bros’ comedy “The Bucket List” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman was No. 7 with $10.2 million, while “There Will Be Blood” starring Daniel Day-Lewis as a ruthless Texas oilman jumped into the top 10 for the first time earning the eighth spot with $4.9 million.

The top was rounded by Disney’s “National treasure: Book of Secrets” on No. 9 with $4.7 million and a debut release of Overture Films, “Mad Money” on No. 10 with $4.6 million.
