It’s clear that there isn’t another Tim Russert and it is
hard for anyone to take his place, but Tom Brokaw tried to maintain the quality of
the “Meet the Press” show, even though he didn’t follow the same line. The retired
‘NBC Nightly News’ anchor was chosen to host the talk show during the 2008
elections.
The producers had to decide very fast, as Tim Russert, the
original host, died on June 13 of heart failure. According to the New York
Times, for the past years, Russert made “Meet the Press” the best audience
rated talk show in the US. It is hard for anyone to fill in his shoes. Russert
was known for his objectivity and fairness whether he was talking to a
Democrat, Republican or to an Independent. He maintained his integrity, which
made the public and the politicians love him.
Until NBC decides on a permanent replacement host for "Meet the Press," Brokaw will
be the one to continue the show. With the first show being a special memorial edition
of “Meet the Press” and with the second show following Russert’s script, this
third edition was Brokaw’s own way of producing it. He made some changes,
taking out the popular old videotapes of politicians where they contradicted
themselves. Moreover, the first segments
of the show were not filmed in Russert’s studio in Washington.
Brokaw knew not to try and imitate Russert and he was very
careful to keep the show’s quality but it was definitely different from what
the audience was accustomed to. Overall, Brokaw is NBC’s best decision as he is
also a well known and appreciated TV figure. Different is not necessarily
something bad and we are looking forward to see what happens next with the show. mselves.
