Mc Donald’s Offers Free Wi-Fi for Zune Users

A new partnership between McDonald's and Microsoft allows Zune users to get new songs for their player through a free Wi-Fi connection provided by Wayport.

According to Microsoft’s press release, the partnership was announced simultaneously with the release of a major software update for Zune, allowing users to wirelessly stream, download, tag and purchase songs through Zune Marketplace, Microsoft's online music store.

The McDonald's deal is highly appreciated because although every Zune already has built-in Wi-Fi, the devices can only access free Wi-Fi hot spots that don't have a browser interrupt. The McDonald's deal adds nearly 10,000 locations from where people can access the Zune Marketplace store.

The Zune 3.0 digital media platform consists of new PC software and device firmware, and new device hardware. Unlike the Apple iPod, Microsoft's Zune devices have always included FM receivers, and the company enhances this functionality in Zune 3.0 with a new Buy from FM tool that allows users to tag songs they hear on the radio and then purchase them wirelessly from the device or later from the PC.

"Our ability to enable and manage applications and devices over converged networks creates exciting new opportunities for our clients to attract new customers whose digital lifestyle extends beyond their home and office," said Dan Lowden, vice president of business development and marketing for Wayport.

The new Zunes will start at $149 for the 8GB model. Microsoft has also announced an expansion of its Zune Originals service, which lets new Zune clients to personalize their devices with laser-engraved art and text.
