Los Angeles - It was no trick. The Detroit Pistons made the Orlando Magic and their season-high seven-game winning streak disappear with timely contributions from Antonio McDyess.
Rodney Stuckey scored 19 points, while McDyess had nine of his 11 in the final quarter on Monday night, as the Pistons beat the visiting Magic 88-82, for their season-high fourth straight victory.
McDyess had been dealt to Denver along with Chauncey Billups in exchange for Allen Iverson on November 3. But the 34-year-old veteran power forward arranged a contract buyout, though he had to sit out the mandatory 30-day period before re-signing with his former club.
Afterward, Iverson gave credit to McDyess for the quality win against the Eastern Conference powerhouse.
"That's what we've been wanting when he was sitting at home for those 30 days," said Iverson, who finished with 15 points. "We couldn't wait for him to get back here and do exactly what he did tonight. He gave us a big lift at both ends of the floor. He just did it all for us tonight."
Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince had 16 points apiece for Detroit (18-11), which, without All-Star guard Richard Hamilton (left groin strain), earned its seventh win in the last eight meetings in the series.
"There were a lot of emotions in the game," Pistons coach Michael Curry said. "They came in playing really well, but we beat them in the playoffs, so there's a little ill feeling there. Every team should have a little edge against the other. It was a great game tonight."
Rashard Lewis hit six three-pointers en route to 23 points, while Dwight Howard finished with 18 points and 18 rebounds for Orlando (24-7), which entered the contest tied with Boston for the league's best road record at 11-3.
"We were able to fight back into the game, but we couldn't make that one play," Lewis said.
The Pistons built a 52-43 halftime advantage by holding Howard to just one point. However, once the All-Star centre got going, the Magic rallied to knot the score at 77-apiece on a four-point play by Lewis with 6:07 remaining.
But McDyess scored five points, and Wallace drilled a three- pointer in a game-breaking 8-0 run, putting the hosts ahead for good, 85-77 with 2:44 left.
The Magic pulled to within five points on Jameer Nelson's three- pointer. But Iverson answered with a jumper with 70 seconds left and the Pistons held on.
