McCanns Call for European “Amber” Alert System

Kate and Gerry McCann, the parents of the 4-year-old girl who disappeared in Portugal last May, urged Euro PMs in Brussels to develop an amber alert system, following the US model, in order to easier find kidnapped children.

Kate McCann declare din a news conference that she was convinced the chances for her little daughter to be found would have grown considerably is such a system was in place in Europe.

Since Madeleine McCann disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal, Praia da Luz, her parents have been desperately searching for her for almost one year, traveling across Europe and seeking help. They also hire private investigators to hunt for the girl, but searches have been fruitless.

The couple toured the whole continent to raise awareness on their case. They even exposed their grief in an audience with the pope. They gave dozens of interviews in which they asked for information from anyone who knows something about their little girl.

“Please, please continue to pray for Madeleine,” Kate McCann cried during one television appeal in January. “We are doing absolutely everything to assist the police with their investigation and we will leave no stone unturned in the search for our daughter,” Gerry McCann added.

During a meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels, Mrs. McCann insisted on the importance of adopting the amber alert system.

“We implore you to support our declaration. Please do not wait for another child and family to suffer as we have,” she said, according to The Press Association.

Mr McCann said: "This is a very simple child alert system with almost no cost implications - who would not support such a system?"

The couple believes their daughter could have been found in a few hours after the abduction, of a system similar to U.S.’ amber alert had existed in Europe.

Currently, only Belgium and France have adopted such a system in Europe.

The “amber” alert system was launched in the United States after nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was kidnapped and later killed by her abductor.
