McCain’s Ranch Gets Free Verizon, AT&T Cell Coverage

One of the advantages of being a presidential nominee for the White House is that you get two of the nation’s largest cell service providers to place portable towards right in your back yard. At least that’s what Republican presidential candidate John McCain did, at the request of his wife, Cindy McCain, who apparently suffered a great deal from not having cell phone coverage on their remote ranch.

The Washington Post reported that while plans for a permanent tower have been abandoned, Verizon was quick in solving the matter by sending a portable tower to the McCain ranch, free of charge of course. And because competition is the key to success, AT&T followed the example and offered another portable tower on wheels for the McCain ranch.

The reasons behind the companies urge to install the two portable towers at the McCain ranch should come as no surprise, since John McCain is in fact a regulator in the Senate Commerce Committee, which oversees the Federal Communications Committee.

Verizon disagreed with the claims that the McCain ranch now has cell phone coverage because John McCain is a member of the Senate Commerce Committee. According to the cell phone company, Cindy McCain made a request, but got rejected. A few months later, on the Secret Service’s request, Verizon had to comply and provide cell coverage. The Secret Service did not confirm that.

AT&T also commented for the same source on their decision to install a portable tower: “We made a temporary accommodation to Senator McCain, who is a presidential nominee. Should a similar need arise, we would make the same accommodation for Senator Obama.”

In the meantime, the Democrats disapproved with McCain receiving free coverage, while the rest of the Americans need to pay for it. The truth of the matter is, no matter the reasons, or how this entire situation started, one thing is definitely wrong: why should they get the service for free? Are the McCains above the rest of the tax-paying Americans?
