After deciding to suspend his campaign due to the ongoing
economic crisis in the United
States, candidate John McCain makes an
uninspired move: angering David Letterman. The comedian is not only an old friend
of the candidate, but is also famous for his ruthless public roasts.
McCain was supposed to appear on the “Late Show” for his 13th
time, but cancelled at the last minute. If you didn’t catch the show, you can
easily imagine how irritated Letterman was after being stood up by a friend. The
explanation he gave to Letterman (which of course ended up on his show, for all
to hear) was that he was racing to the airport, as he allegedly had to return
to Washington
and deal with the economic crisis.
This behavior did not bode well for John McCain, as
Letterman was rightfully angry at his friend’s last-minute cancellation. He
told the public he was disappointed and asked, rhetorically, if McCain
suspended his campaign because of the economic crisis or because of his rapidly
deteriorating popularity. He then added that such a move may lead people to
think that McCain bails out when things start getting rough. Letterman also
jabbed George W. Bush, saying that “we've got a guy like that now!”
Letterman moved past this moment and proceeded with
interviewing MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. In the middle of their talk, an
interesting twist was brought to Letterman’s attention: John McCain was minutes
away, at the CBS Network, getting ready to be interviewed by Katie Couric. He
showed the audience a live backstage shot of McCain preparing to enter the set.
Without losing his sense of humor, David Letterman was
noticeably aggravated by this event. Looking at the monitor that showed McCain
in the CBS building, Letterman yelled "He doesn't seem to be racing to the
airport, does he? (...) Hey John, I got a question! You need a ride to the
airport?"
