New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said he wants to install wind turbines on high bridges and sky scrapers throughout the city. His proposal is part of an ambitious strategy to develop renewable energy that would better serve new yorkers.
Bloomberg, who has made energy efficiency a basis of his administration, presented his intentions regarding renewable energy strategy for the Big Apple during a Las Vegas conference with the same agenda.
The first step would be to talk to companies and experts in the renewable energy field and study how such windmills can be built in NYC, the mayor said in his presentation.
"We want their best ideas for creating both small- and large-scale projects serving New Yorkers," he said.
The mayor didn’t mention which bridges or other tall structures or buildings would be aimed for wind turbines construction. The windy coast off Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island seems to be the best location for such projects and the eventual wind farms built there could provide 10% of New York’s electricity, Bloomberg’s aides said. The project could be finalized in about 10 years.
“When it comes to producing clean power, we’re determined to make New York the No. 1 city in the nation,” Mr. Bloomberg said. He added that he imagined that one day the Statue of Liberty’s torch would be powered by a wind turbine.
However, besides the fact that Bloomberg has only 18 months left in office to get the project running, several obstacles seem to stand in the way of the mayor’s plans. Most people are unlikely to accept the project just for the reason that it would alter the facade of their neighborhoods. Moreover, wind-harnessing is a technology that can be very costly.
