Tom Cruise raised eyebrows a couple of years back when he announced his intentions of eating the placenta from his daughter Suri's birth. Now actor Matthew McConaughey has jumped on the celebrity placenta bandwagon telling CNN's House Call With Sanjay Gupta that he saved the placenta from the birth of his first son, Levi, and plans on using it as fertilizer in his orchard.
"It’s going to be in the orchards and it’s going to bear some wonderful fruit," McConaughey said, according to an interview transcript. "
"When I was in Australia, they had a placenta tree that was on the river … and all the placentas of all that tribe, all that clan, whatever aboriginal tribe that was, all the placentas went under that one tree and it was this huge behemoth of just health and strength. This tree was just growing taller and stronger above the rest of Mother Nature around it. It was gorgeous," he added.
McConaughey and his girlfriend of two years, model Camila Alves, welcomed their first child together on July 8. He announced he was a father-to-be in January in a message he posted on his website.
Since coming into the world, Levi graced the cover of OK! magazine in the arms of his mother and father, earlier this month. On Thursday, Levi took his first trip down the red carpet – in a car seat, as his proud parents attended a bash for Alves’ new handbag line, MUXO, at Kitson in Los Angeles.
"[Levi] was gonna stay home, but then he said, ‘Dad, mom, I wanna go support mom’s purses!" Matthew joked with Entertainment Tonight. "At 30 days old, he’s talking about stuff like that!"
The 38-year-old actor also revealed recently that he and Alves took their son to a recent John Mellencamp concert saying Levi "is equipped to be around the sights and sounds of people."
