Mattel Inc decided to recall 18 million toys manufactured in China because of small magnets that can be easily detached and swallowed by children, the California-based company announced on Tuesday.
About 9 million products will be pulled off shelves in the United States and Canada, a similar amount following to be recalled from other markets across the world that commercialize Barbie, Polly Pocket and Batman figurines.
Tuesday’s announcement comes after approximately one million toys were recalled earlier this month because of the paint covering them. Studies revealed that the paint on several brands manufactured by a Mattel subsidiary in China contains high levels of lead that could be dangerous for children’s health.
According to Nancy Nord, the head of US Consumer Product Safety Commission, magnets swallowed can bond and block or even perforate the intestine. That is why Mattel acted quickly and recalled the toys.
Due to faulty products, the Chinese industry received a major blow and mostly the export sector. Many companies rely on lower manufacturing costs and seal contracts with Chinese factories, but the latest developments made most contractors think twice about the “Made in China” label.
Controversy still surrounds pet food, toothpaste and even fish products coming from China, US regulators taking supplementary measures to ensure that products coming from the Asian country comply with standards.
Similar measures were taken in China also, causing losses to numerous companies. One of the owners involved in the toys scandal committed suicide on Saturday, leaving behind many questions unanswered.
