The Boston Red Sox paid $103 million for Daisuke Matsuzaka and it seems like that didn’t turn out as such a good deal. The Japanese pitcher wasn’t able to last for five innings in a playoff game yet.
In yesterday’s game against the Cleveland Indians he was changed in the 4 2/3 innings after he allowed four runs, including a two-run home run to Kenny Lofton. The Indians eventually won the game 4-2 and now have the upper hand in the best- of-seven American League Championship Series.
"He made one glaring mistake to Lofton. It's a lot of pitches, and the more pitches you throw, especially to dangerous hitters, the better chance you give them'', manager Terry Francona said during the press conference after the game.
After the Red Sox signed him to a six-year, $52 million contract in December; after they had paid $51 million to Japan's Seibu Lions just for the right to negotiate with him, Matsuzaka declared his intention of helping Boston win a world championship. Well, despite his good intentions he was just 15-12 in his rookie year with a 4.40 earned run average.
The Indians chased Matsuzaka in the fifth inning on Monday and managed to grab a 2-1 lead before a rough crowd of 44,402 at Jacobs Field.
He looked very upset after the loss to the Indians. 45 minutes after the game he was still wearing the Sox uniform and answered to reporter by using a two-sentence statement that was read through an interpreter.
"As you saw, I allowed them to score first and I wasn't able to hang on after giving up the lead. I wanted to do everything I could today to win,'' the statement said.
