During the first concert of Madonna’s “Sticky and Sweet”
tour, held Saturday night at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, more than 40,000 fans were
subjected to an anything but subtle display of the singer’s political views.
The statement which some found quite distasteful was aimed
at John McCain, the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presumptive
nominee of the Republican Party in the 2008 presidential election and consisted
in a video montage that left no room for interpretation.
Images of Adolf Hitler, Robert Mugabe, intermingled with some
others showing the dire aftermath of global warming, environmental and social
destruction, meshed into a pretty
obvious act of taking a stand against the aforementioned
senator, since his image appeared in the grim collage, too.
And as if this wasn’t enough to get her message through to
the audience, Madonna went, like many a time before, even further and also
showed a series of images of John Lennon, Al Gore, Mahatma Gandhi and none
other than Barack Obama, the junior United States Senator from Illinois and
McCain counter-candidate in the presidential elections.
Not exactly a virgin when it comes to giving rise to
controversy, the singer got her performance reviewed- the political one, of
course- at the drop of a hat. McCain spokesperson Taylor Griffin told US
Magazine on Monday the following: “It's a disappointing and vulgar attack on
John McCain, who has devoted his life to the cause of freedom and the fight
against tyranny.”
Nevertheless, this cannot be over until the slender and
really limber lady sings.
