Mass. Pregnancy ‘Pact’ – The Result of an Indifferent Society?

With movies like “Juno” praising teen pregnancy, which scored very well among moviegoers last year, most of them teenagers, no wonder a group of girls from a Massachusetts high school decided to get pregnant at the same time, making what many called a “pregnancy pact,” to raise their babies together.

Making the story short, 17 girls at the Gloucester High School made several visits to the school’s clinic to get pregnancy tests last October acting very disappointed every time they learned they were not pregnant, Principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine in an exclusive article published last week.

The number of pregnant girls baffled school officials and the entire community, as there were no more than four pregnancies among teenagers at the beginning of last year’s summer vacation.

But can you really blame these girls when the entire media is full of stories of Britney Spears’ teenage sister, Jamie Lynn Spears having her baby just last week, one might wonder. Maybe yes, maybe not. When you read the joy on your celebrity idol’s face, having a child is the perfect decision you can make, as feelings appear to fade away any sense of rationality.

But can you really raise a child when you are no further than being a child yourself? Is this the best decision a 16-year-old girl could make? What exactly is the reason behind these girls’ decision? Was it the result of a society failing to teach its young generation what’s best for them because there is no money to run these kinds of programs?

Was it loneliness? Was it their family failing to provide the love and support they needed, when they needed? Was it the thought of having someone loving them unconditionally? Was it…

There are so many questions this “pregnancy pact” has raised and to which many of the state and school’s officials and parents have tried to answer. How much they have succeeded remains to be seen in the decisions they will make for the future of other teenagers.

It is no longer a secret that the number of teen pregnancies in the U.S. is on the rise with more than 700,000 American teens getting pregnant last year, resulting in more than 400,000 babies. However, the Gloucester “pact” is unique, posing itself a serious problem that needs to be addressed right away.
