Ron Leavitt, co-creator of hilarious, luckless show salesman Al Bundy died Sunday of lung cancer at his home in Los Angeles at age 60.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Leavitt started his career in television in the 1970s writing episodes of “Busting Loose,” “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley” and “The Bad News Bears.” In the 1980s, Leavitt had a stint as a producer of “The Jeffersons.”
In 1987, Leavitt co-created “Married…With Children” together with Michael G. Moye. The sitcom ran on the Fox network from 1987 to 1997 and became the network’s second-longest running sitcom behind “The Simpsons.” Leavitt went on to exec produce and write or co-write almost 150 episodes of the show, which was nominated seven times for Emmys.
“He created that show to make people laugh and show life isn't perfect "I know he's going to make God laugh, but Jesus I miss him," said the model and actress Jessica Hahn, with whom he had a relationship, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
More recently, Leavitt co-created, exec produced and wrote “Unhappily Ever After,” which aired for five seasons on the WB.
Besides his career in television, Leavitt was recognized by the state of California as citizen of the year in 2001.
Leavitt is survived by two children, Matt and Samantha. The family plans a private funeral service to honor him.
