"Marley & Me" debuted at No. 1 and sold approximately $37 million worth of tickets since Friday, according to the film’s distributor, 20th Century Fox. Starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, “Marley & Me” is a tender-hearted comedy that centers on the life of a family and its dog, a playful golden retriever.
“Bedtime Stories,” the family comedy who tells the story of a hotel handyman, earned the second place in the box-office with $28.1 million over the weekend and $38.6 million since its debut in U.S. theatres on Christmas Day. It was expected to take in just $24 million.
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" appealed to scores of U.S. moviegoers as it earned the third place, grossing $27.2 million over this weekend and $39 million since premiering Christmas Day, Walt Disney Pictures said.
Directed by David Fincher and starring Jennifer Aniston’s ex-husband Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who is born in his eighties and starts aging backwards with weird consequences.
Rounding out the top are Tom Cruise's "Valkyrie," on the 4th place with $21.5 million for the weekend and $30 million for the four days since Christmas. While the historical thriller film, set in Nazi Germany during World War II, averaged $7,942 on 2,711 screens, "Marley & Me" had a theater average of $10,632 on 3,480 screens and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" had $9,036 on 2,988 screens.
