Twentieth Century Fox's "Marley & Me,” canine comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, leads the North American box office for a second weekend on Sunday, becoming the first Christmas holiday picture to hit $100 million. The movie, based on John Grogan's bestseller adaptation of his memoir about a lovable Labrador retriever puppy acquired by newlyweds, earned $24.1 million during the three days beginning Friday, taking its total box-office haul to $106.5 million. It marks Aniston's second consecutive $100 million-plus movie, following 2006's "The Break-Up," which finished with $118.7 million, according to box office tracker Media by Numbers.
Going into the holiday, most thought "Bedtime Stories," which is a broad family film, would take the lead, but "Marley" came out of the gate at No. 1 and has remained there.
It was followed by another comedy, “Bedtime Stories,” from Walt Disney Company, with Adam Sandler about a hotel maintenance worker who spins yarns that come true for his niece and nephew. This movie took in about $20.3 million over the weekend, for a total of $85 million since opening.
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett's film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story about a man who ages in reverse came third, with about $18.5 million in weekend sales for a $79 million total.
The Nazi thriller "Valkyrie," from MGM, with Tom Cruise as Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, remained the No. 4 film for a second weekend. The film took in $14 million, for a total of $60.7 million since opening on Christmas. Its success is based on a story about a plot for killing Adolf Hitler by a group of German military officers.
Rounding out the top five films for the weekend was "Yes Man," a Warner Bros. comedy with the one and only Jim Carrey, which took in $13.9 million over the weekend for a domestic total of $79.4 million.
